Born in London, in 1986, and self taught, Joe Goldman creates abstract paintings, with elements of digital and graphic aesthetics. His work is concerned with exploring the relationship between traditional painting and new technologies, inspired by figures in each world. The work also focuses on depicting the duality of the mind and the heart. Through variation in the mark making and textures, emerges a interplay between subconscious and impulsive expression, intermingled with clearer, cerebral decisions. The piece of work then arises out of this balance, or occasionally, tug of war between heartfelt intuition and thought. Influenced by the concept of spiritual integration as popularised by Jung, there is a motivation to create a captivating presence in the work by fine balance between the dualities, all the while maintaining a priority on playful aesthetics, and colour harmony.
The works are composed of many different marks which reflect, and seek to portray the varied physicality of human movement. The squiggles, dashes, and broader strokes evoke varying forms of movement and level of energy. Indeed, some of the marks initially composed digitally using a tablet, and then painted; are the result of a vigorous release of energy via the hand/ finger on the screen, while others are more deliberate and gentle, their trajectory more undulating and open to succumbing to change depending on their surroundings, in real time.
